Helical foundation systems are gaining worldwide acceptance from the construction industry and engineering community as a viable deep foundation alternative. In 2007, the International Code Council Evaluation Service, Inc. (ICC-ES) approved AC358, Acceptance Criteria for Helical Foundation Systems and Devices. Helical piles are also now included in the 2009 International Building Code.

In this presentation, we discuss helical terminology, advantages and disadvantages of certain products, and overall benefits of using helical foundation systems. Several case study photos are presented to show typical product applications. We walk through methods for determining the capacity of helical foundation systems and then follow with verification of capacity through torque correlation and load testing. Finally, we discuss ICC-ES AC358 and why that document is important to the helical industry as well as to specifiers. Designers with either a great deal of helical pile experience or just a little will find this presentation informative and beneficial.

At the end of the presentation, attendees should be able to:
  • Define common helical foundation terminology.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of round shaft versus square shaft helical foundation systems.
  • Determine the appropriate applications for new construction helical piles and helical tiebacks.
  • Identify three different methods for determining capacity of helical foundation systems.
